Crusin’ …Its Route 66 and the Sunset Strip. It’s small-town USA – Main Street on Saturday night. Cruisin’ is a coolness, an attitude, a swagger that comes from looking sharp and feeing your best. Cruisin’ is being in your prime, Primetime! Bull moose are the “big boys” of the deer family, and if any animal can go out Cruisin’. These guys pack the horsepower to do the job up right. All summer they’ve been hanging out, pouring as much energy into growing their impressive antlers as a cow moose expends nursing her calf. In the fall, the bulls gather to strut their stuff. A year ago this gang watched the parade from the shadows, waiting their turn. Tonight, the bulls are tuned up, fueled, polished and shined. The trio’s revved up, “Cruisin’ The Creek” lookin’ to impress, drivin’ down the center lane of a wildlands highway.

For as long as folktales are remembered, as long as legends survive, travelers will know the landmark ridge along Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front as “Old Man of the Hills.” Here the grizzly transitions between the rugged dark-timbers of wilderness and the ranchland beginnings of the Great Plains. It is a place so rich in plant and animal diversity that it is often called “North America’s Serengeti.” A landscape where change comes only from the elements-wind, rain, fire, and ice. A Montana gem that remains uncut because ranches, public- and private-land managers, and conservation groups stepped forward with a reason. Larry Zabel, internationally renowned artist and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Foundation board member, visited the Boone and Crockett Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch on Montana’s Rocky Mountain Front. Here, he captures the experience of inhabiting the heart of what is good and right with this wild country in his spectacular 30″ x 51″ masterpiece “Old Man of the Hills.” The original artwork and limited edition prints present the first piece of the “Foundation Series.” A collection created to put dollars on the ground for the hills will survive to walk by the shoulder of the grizzly. Funds generated from this magnificent painting will help protect and enhance the “Magic that is Montana.”

In the “Big Sky Country”, natural history, cultural history, and outdoor recreation play a big part in our lives. From the rolling plains to the jagged peaks, Montana’s assorted landscapes hold a diverse collection of Western lifescapes. Beginning with our dinosaur discoveries and Native American sites, to the camps of the Corp of Discovery and the ghost towns of the gold strike days, Montana compels all of us to become an adventurer.
This fine open series lithograph was made from the original oil painting. It is printed on fine art paper of heavy stock, 100% acid free.

Although the elk catch his eye, the homesteader methodically continues his work. Winter is closing in and there’s a barn to raise. It will take time before he comes to measure his wealth by the richness of the Montana landscape. The herd bull, too, is momentarily distracted, checking the smell of the draft horse and watching the movement of the homesteader. He hears the challenging bugle of a distant bull and dutifully returns to his harem. Then, near the turn of the century, the pioneer stopped working for a moment to take in the landscape, and there was a ghostly stillness. Somehow, during his watch, the elk vanished. With a vengeance he banded together with miners and merchants to bring back the animals and vowed to never let them disappear again. Montana is a vast landscape of differing traditions that mix to form a uniquely Western way of life. Montana is also a small neighborhood formed from closely tied values of community and wildness. A very special place that cannot survive without neighbors keeping an eye out for each other.

This limited edition lithograph by Gary Carter is an edition of 1989 reproductions plus artist’s and publisher’s proofs. This offset lithograph was published on August 4, 1987 on 100% archival paper, pH neutral, number grade with an image size of 20′ X 30″ with 2″ trim on the top and both sides and 3.5″ on the bottom.

This lithograph was sanctioned by the Montana Statehood Centennial Commission as part of the official commemoration of Montana’s 100th anniversary in 1989 and was awarded the distinction of “exclusivity for creation of reproductions from any original painting and was further awarded “exclusivity” as “The Governors’ Edition”.

These lithographs described here were reproduced from copyrighted oil on canvas painting with an image of 40′ X 60″ and were personally inspected by artist Gary Carter. Each and every lithograph was personally signed by artist Gary Carter and (at the 1988 time of signing) then Montana’s Governor Ted Schwinden, and other former Montana governors Thomas L. Judge, Forrest H. Anderson and Tim M. Babcock. All signatures are in pencil.

In 1988 artist Gary Carter wrote: “Montana is a precious resource and should be jealously guarded. It is a land of diverse physical beauty, sparsely populated by the most independent individuals on earth. Montanans are here by choice. It would be impossible to pick one physical geographic feature or one industry to aesthetically represent our state on her 100th birthday. So this format — a “montage” — was selected to show the many “faces” of Montana. Montana has the beauty and heritage which Americans find magnetic. Also, we have a high latitude and average elevation which keeps us out of a tropical designation and overpopulation. Just between us friends, let’s not divulge what our winters are really like. I came to Montana as a fulfillment of a child’s dream; to live and record history past and present, possibly as a cowboy. Once a decision is made to enjoy life rather than be controlled by it, the income doesn’t really matter. We have quality, not quantity, and usually the happiness allows one to be creative. This Centennial painting celebrates Montana’s heritage and people. From the Lewis and Clark Expedition to the Native American population — the mining, railroading, timber, cattle and homesteader traditions — our state is truly blessed.”

A “Must Read” For Anyone Who Enjoys and Values Wildlife

Montana’s Wildlife Legacy ~ Decimation to Restoration is a historical wildlife book providing the most complete written reference of Montana’s wildlife legacy. The book documents how exploitation and technology brought the legendary wildlife resources of Montana to the brink of extermination by the end of the 19th Century. This led to major wildlife restoration and conservation efforts during the 20th Century. Because of these efforts, Montana is blessed with exceptional wildlife resources as we enter the 21st century.

This book is a companion to the “Back From The Brink – Montana’s Wildlife Legacy” video documentary.
